Betsy Ross, a skilled flagmaker in Pennsylvania, crafted flags for over 50 years—including for the Pennsylvania State Navy in 1777. During the Revolutionary War, many individuals made flags for the colonies, but the most iconic became the 13-star circle flag, now known as the Betsy Ross Flag. Historical records suggest this circular star design emerged in the 1790s, though it has come to symbolize the birth of the United States.

In 1870, Betsy Ross’s grandson, William J. Canby, shared her story with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He recalled that General George Washington, Robert Morris, and Colonel Ross visited Betsy in June 1776, asking her to sew a flag based on a rough sketch—later revised by Washington in her back parlor. This account linked the flag’s creation to the founding days of the nation.

He gave a talk at the meeting of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, during which he stated:

“It is not tradition, it is a report from the lips of the principal participator in the transaction, directly told not to one or two, but a dozen or more living witnesses, of which I, myself, am one, though but a little boy when I heard it…. Colonel Ross, with Robert Morris and General Washington, called on Mrs. Ross and told her they were a committee of Congress, and wanted her to make a flag from the drawing, a rough one, which, upon her suggestions, was redrawn by General Washington in pencil in her back parlor. This was prior to the Declaration of Independence. I fix the date to be during Washington’s visit to Congress from New York in June, 1776 when he came to confer upon the affairs of the Army, the flag being no doubt, one of these affairs.”
