John Hough is a Southern history writer and lifelong student of the War Between the States, Confederate history, and traditional American values. Born and raised in Florida, John comes from a proud Southern family with deep roots in military service and law enforcement. From an early age, he was taught the importance of hard work, faith, personal responsibility, and honoring the sacrifices of those who came before us.
For more than two decades, John has devoted himself to studying Confederate history, Civil War campaigns, Southern heritage, constitutional history, and firsthand soldier accounts from the 1860s. His personal research library includes works from respected historians and authors such as Shelby Foote, Bruce Catton, James McPherson, Douglas Southall Freeman, Lochlainn Seabrook, and the Kennedy brothers, along with hundreds of Civil War memoirs, battlefield journals, military records, and historical archives from across the South.
John has traveled extensively to historic battlefields, cemeteries, museums, and preservation sites throughout the Southern states, spending years researching the men, families, and communities impacted by the war. His writing focuses on preserving the stories, traditions, and historical legacy of the South while encouraging honest discussion and continued education about America’s past.
In recognition of his dedication to independent historical research and heritage preservation, John received the 2022 Heritage History Preservation Award from a regional Southern historical organization for his contributions to Civil War education and Southern historical storytelling.
Through his work, John aims to keep Confederate and Southern history alive for future generations by sharing forgotten stories, honoring the courage and sacrifice of Southern soldiers, and defending the importance of preserving America’s historical heritage. His articles combine historical research with a deep respect for the culture, traditions, and values that shaped the South.
Outside of writing and research, John enjoys hunting, riding ATVs, exploring rural backroads, and participating in shooting sports. Whether studying history or spending time outdoors, he remains deeply connected to the Southern way of life and the heritage he proudly represents.
