John Hough is a lifelong student of American history with a deep passion for the Civil War era, Southern heritage, and the stories that shaped the nation. Born and raised in Florida, John comes from a proud family of veterans and law enforcement officers, where hard work, resilience, and personal responsibility were instilled in him from an early age. Those traditional American values continue to guide both his writing and his everyday life.
Over the years, John has dedicated thousands of hours to studying American military history, the Civil War, constitutional history, and Southern culture. His personal library and continued research include works from respected historians and authors such as Shelby Foote, Bruce Catton, James McPherson, Lochlainn Seabrook, the Kennedy brothers, Douglas Southall Freeman, and Winston Groom, along with numerous firsthand Civil War memoirs, battlefield journals, and soldier accounts from both Union and Confederate perspectives.
John has also spent years visiting battlefields, historical landmarks, museums, and preservation sites across the South to better understand and preserve the stories of America’s past. His research-driven approach and passion for historical storytelling earned him the 2022 Heritage History Preservation Award from a regional Southern historical society for his contributions to independent historical writing and educational Civil War content.
Through his articles and research, John is passionate about keeping history alive for future generations and honoring the sacrifices of American heroes who helped shape the country. His writing focuses on making history engaging, accessible, and meaningful for everyday Americans who value freedom, tradition, and the lessons of the past.
When he’s not researching or writing, John enjoys spending time outdoors hunting, riding ATVs, exploring rural backroads, and participating in shooting sports. Whether in the woods or behind the keyboard, John remains deeply connected to the land, history, and values he proudly calls American.
