The Official War Ensign of Hitler’s Navy
The Kriegsmarine Naval Battle Flag — also known as the German War Ensign (Reichskriegsflagge) — is one of the most striking and historically significant military flags of World War II. Flown from the mastheads and sterns of German warships from 1938 until Germany’s unconditional surrender in May 1945, this flag represents the naval arm of the Third Reich at the height of its power and the full span of its defeat.
History of the Kriegsmarine & Its Battle Flag
The Kriegsmarine (German: War Navy) was the official naval force of Nazi Germany, operating from 1935 to 1945 under the successive commands of Grand Admiral Erich Raeder and later Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz — the man who would briefly succeed Hitler as German head of state in the final days of the war.
The War Ensign of 1938 replaced an earlier version and became the definitive naval battle flag of the Third Reich. The design combined two powerful symbols:
- The Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz) — one of Germany’s oldest and most respected military decorations, tracing its origins to the Napoleonic Wars of 1813 and carried forward through the Franco-Prussian War and World War I as Germany’s premier symbol of military valor
- The Hakenkreuz (Swastika) — the central emblem of the Nazi Party and the Third Reich, incorporated into the ensign following the Nazification of all German military institutions in the mid-1930s
The flag was flown by some of the most famous warships in naval history, including the Bismarck, the Tirpitz, the Graf Spee, and the fleet of U-boats that waged the devastating Battle of the Atlantic against Allied shipping from 1939 to 1945.
The Kriegsmarine fought across every major naval theater of the war — the North Atlantic, the Arctic, the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and the Black Sea — before being dissolved at Germany’s surrender in May 1945.
Frequently Asked Questions & Little-Known Facts
Q: What is the difference between the Kriegsmarine flag and the standard Nazi national flag? While both feature the swastika, the War Ensign is a distinctly different design — incorporating the traditional Iron Cross and following the heraldic conventions of German naval ensigns stretching back to the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine). It was flown exclusively by naval vessels and installations, not as a civilian or party flag.
Q: Was the Iron Cross on this flag a Nazi symbol? No — the Iron Cross predates Nazism by over a century. Established by King Frederick William III of Prussia in 1813, it was Germany’s preeminent military decoration through the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71) and World War I (1914–18). The Nazis incorporated it into their military iconography precisely because of its deep historical prestige within German military culture.
Q: How large was the Kriegsmarine? At its wartime peak the Kriegsmarine operated over 1,000 U-boats, hundreds of surface warships, and employed approximately 700,000 personnel. Its U-boat fleet sank over 3,000 Allied ships during the Battle of the Atlantic — the longest continuous military campaign of World War II.
Q: What productions feature the Kriegsmarine flag? The Kriegsmarine War Ensign appears in virtually every major WWII naval production, including Das Boot (1981), The Enemy Below, Sink the Bismarck!, U-571, Dunkirk, and numerous stage and film productions requiring period naval accuracy.
Q: Is it legal to display this flag? In the United States, display of this flag is fully protected under the First Amendment. However, display and possession laws vary significantly across Germany, Austria, France, Poland, and other European nations. It is the buyer’s sole responsibility to understand and comply with the laws of their country.

No this is a sensitive and controversial flag…but I find it as a piece of history. And to be reminded of those atrocities. The people who experienced it are almost all dead? The memory fades. Quickly? With that said. So, I thought I was gonna get a measly but ok print? Noooooh! It’s real thick cloth and it is sown/embroidered(?) This is the highest quality flag I have ever encountered. Everything else I have seen seems to be of much less quality than what these guys deliver. I would say it is a great product and at a great value/price. So well done Ultimateflags.com!! Thank you for delivering on such a high level! Quality is clearly not dead. Thank you for that flag!!! And wonderful service!!
I love it ,quality awesome as always
Very nice and high quality. It's hard to get a flag of this nature at all anymore, much less an embroidered cotton one!
