20th Maine Flag – Volunteer Infantry Regiment Flag

The 20th Regiment Maine Flag was first used in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The 20th Maine Infantry Regiment was a group of volunteer soldiers from Maine who fought for the Union Army during the Civil War (1861–1865). They became famous for defending Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania from July 1 to July 3, 1863. Today, their history and traditions live on in the 133rd Engineer Battalion of the Maine Army National Guard and the U.S. Army.

The regiment formed in Maine and entered federal service on August 29, 1862, led by Colonel Adelbert Ames. They joined the Army of the Potomac’s V Corps and stayed there until they were mustered out on July 16, 1865. Early on, they were held back at Antietam in September 1862 and spent a cold night near Confederate lines at Fredericksburg in December 1862. In spring 1863, they missed the Battle of Chancellorsville because of a smallpox vaccine problem. On May 20, 1863, Joshua L. Chamberlain took command after Colonel Ames was promoted.

At Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, the 20th Maine held the far left of the Union line on Little Round Top hill. After more than an hour of fierce fighting against two Alabama regiments, they ran low on ammunition. Instead of giving ground, they fixed bayonets and charged downhill, surprising the attackers and driving them back. This brave move saved the Union line from being flanked and helped capture many enemy soldiers. Had they fallen back, the entire Union position might have collapsed.
