13 Star USA Vintage Patriotic Gadsden Flag
13 Star Betsy Ross & Gadsden Vintage Flag — Don’t Tread on Me
Size: 3×5 ft Standard Polyester
The Two Most Iconic Symbols of the Revolution, United
In the summer of 1776, two symbols were taking shape that would define the American experiment for centuries to come. The 13-star flag — its stars arranged in a circle on a field of red, white, and blue — represented a new nation announcing itself to the world. The Gadsden rattlesnake represented the character of the people building it: self-reliant, alert, and absolutely clear about the terms of engagement.
This vintage combination flag brings both together, rendered in the worn tones of history rather than the clean lines of a modern print.
The Betsy Ross Flag — Legend and History
The story of Betsy Ross sewing the first American flag in her Philadelphia upholstery shop is one of the most enduring legends in American history. According to the account passed down through her family and first publicly told by her grandson in 1870, George Washington himself visited her shop with a rough design, and Ross suggested the now-iconic five-pointed star arrangement before sewing the first version of what would become the national flag.
Historians note the story cannot be confirmed through contemporary documents — the legend surfaced nearly a century after the fact. What is documented is that the Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777 established thirteen stars and thirteen stripes as the official design of the United States flag, without specifying the exact arrangement. The circular pattern — thirteen stars of equal standing, arranged without hierarchy, each one representing a colony — has carried the name “Betsy Ross” ever since regardless of who first stitched it.
The circular arrangement itself is the most powerful element of the design. Unlike a grid or a scattered pattern, the circle places every star in equal relation to every other — no colony above, none below, all sovereign, all united.
Two Flags, One Founding Moment
What makes this combination design so historically coherent is that both symbols were born in the same revolutionary moment, within months of each other, by people who knew each other and were building the same country.
The Gadsden rattlesnake first flew in January 1776. The Stars and Stripes was formally adopted in June 1777. The men and women who created these symbols — Gadsden, Ross, Franklin, Washington, Hopkins — moved in the same circles, attended the same congresses, and shared the same urgent project of founding a nation from scratch.
Flying them together isn’t a modern political statement layered onto history. It’s a return to the moment when these symbols existed side by side as the visual vocabulary of a single cause.
The Vintage Treatment
The distressed weathered finish works particularly well on this combination — the aged yellows, faded reds, and worn blues suggest a flag that has been carried through the full sweep of American history rather than printed yesterday. Both symbols are strong enough visually to hold their identity through the distressing, while the worn tones add a depth and gravitas that a clean modern print doesn’t carry.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Betsy Ross actually sew the first American flag? The story is a cherished American legend that cannot be confirmed through contemporary historical documents — it was first publicly told by her grandson nearly a century after the supposed event. What is documented is that Ross was a Philadelphia seamstress and upholsterer with documented ties to prominent Founding Fathers. Whether or not she sewed the first flag, the 13-star circular arrangement that bears her name has become one of the most recognizable symbols in American history.
What does the circular arrangement of 13 stars represent? The circle places all thirteen stars in equal standing — no state above or below another, each sovereign colony represented equally in the union. It’s a geometric expression of the founding principle that the states entered the union as equals, which is why the design has remained symbolically powerful long after the original thirteen colonies grew to fifty states.
Why is the Betsy Ross flag associated with the 2nd Amendment movement? Like the Gadsden Flag, the Betsy Ross 13-star design has been adopted by constitutional and patriotic movements as a symbol of founding-era American values — in particular the original framework of individual rights and limited government that the founders established. The combination of both symbols on a single flag doubles down on that connection.
Is this a historically documented flag design? This is a modern combination design merging two authentic Revolutionary-era symbols. Both source flags are historically documented; the combined design is a contemporary patriotic statement drawing on original founding imagery.
Is standard polyester suitable for outdoor use? Yes — super-weave polyester handles fair-weather outdoor conditions well and flies easily in light breeze. For permanent year-round outdoor display, an embroidered nylon version offers greater long-term durability.

Six pointed Stars
This flag was used to signal the presence of the Commander-In-Chief of the Continental Armies, George Washington. It accompanied him, and was displayed near his personal tent or building. The original is believed to be the earliest surviving 13-star American flag. It is unique due to its 6-pointed stars and it appears that it was designed by Washington himself. Washington wore three silver six-pointed stars, and a blue sash across his chest, indicating his status as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. Five pointed stars were not used until Betsy Ross changed them to make them easier to embroider.
This flag was also the US Navy Union Jack during the revolutionary war.
