Following the Battle of First Manassas, General Beauregard sought to resolve the confusion caused by the similar flags used by both the North and South on the battlefield. The Confederate First National flag was often mistaken for the Union’s Stars and Stripes, and vice versa. Within a few months, the square-shaped “Southern Cross” was officially adopted as the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. After the war, Confederate veteran Harrison McKim captured the era’s sentiment when he wrote:
