The Confederate South Carolina Sovereignty Flag was flown when South Carolina seceeded, and was used during the Civil War. It was a red flag with 15 stars in a blue cross, and had a palm tree and crescent are in the corner. It may have been the inspiration for the Confederate Battle Flag. William Porcher Miles, the Confederate Congressman (and an officer under General Beuregard’s command) who championed the Battle Flag design was from South Carolina.
