Historic General Lee Flag in Beautiful Sewn/Embroidered Cotton
Size: 3 x 5 feet
This flag is the First National Confederate States of America design, but with a distinctive star pattern. It is thought to have been sewn by Lee’s wife, Mary Custis Lee, and the couple’s daughters. The original is in the Museum of the Confederacy, located in Richmond. It’s in remarkably good condition to this day.
This flag was used to mark the General’s headquarters at any given time. The unusual star pattern would easily identify the headquarters as those of General Lee. The flag’s thirteen stars represent the eleven states of the Confederacy, along with Missouri and Kentucky, which remained in the Union but had powerful secessionist leanings.
The information we have indicates that Lee began using this flag in mid-1862, and continued flying it until late 1863 or early 1864. It was retired and replaced by the new 2nd National flag (adopted by the Confederacy in May of 1863). It was customary for the official Confederate National Flag to be flown by commanding officers, so Lee switched to a new flag issued by the Richmond Clothing Depot.
Lee’s distinctive flag was preserved by his family and is still well known today.

The Hardee Flag was used during the Civil War. It was a simple flag only having a blue background and a white circle in its center.
William Joseph Hardee (October 12, 1815 – November 6, 1873) was a career U.S. Army and Confederate States Army officer. For the U.S. Army, he served in the Second Seminole War and in the Mexican–American War, where he was captured and exchanged. In the American Civil War, he sided with the South and became a general. Hardee served in the Western Theater and quarreled sharply with two of his commanding officers, Braxton Bragg and John Bell Hood. He served in the Atlanta Campaign of 1864 and the Carolinas Campaign of 1865, where he surrendered with General Joseph E. Johnston to William Tecumseh Sherman in April.
In 1855 at the behest of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, Hardee published Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics for the Exercise and Manoeuvres of Troops When Acting as Light Infantry or Riflemen, popularly known as Hardee’s Tactics, which became the best-known drill manual of the Civil War.[Hardee’s writings about military tactics were widely used on both sides in the conflict.
