Confederate Battle Flag – Army of Northern Virginia Battle Flag (Square, 32″ x 32″)
The Real “Rebel Flag” — Know the Difference
Most people flying what they call the “Rebel Flag” are actually displaying the Confederate Jack — a common mix-up among flag enthusiasts. This flag is the genuine article: the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, the standard actually carried by Confederate soldiers on the fields of Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and beyond.
A Brief History of the Confederate Battle Flag
The flag now popularly called the “Rebel Flag” has a specific and often misunderstood origin. The Confederate States of America (1861–1865) used several official national flags during the Civil War, but none of them were this design. The square battle flag was developed in September 1861 by General P.G.T. Beauregard and Congressman William Porcher Miles to solve a battlefield problem: the first Confederate national flag (the “Stars and Bars”) was too easily confused with the U.S. Stars and Stripes during the smoke and chaos of combat.
The resulting design — a blue Saint Andrew’s Cross (Saltire) with 13 white stars on a red field — became the battle standard of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, the most prominent Confederate fighting force of the war. The 13 stars represent the 13 states that either seceded or were claimed by the Confederacy.
Much like the Founding Fathers — including Thomas Jefferson and George Washington — who asserted the right of political self-determination by breaking from British rule in 1776, Confederate leaders argued the same principle of states’ rights when Southern states began seceding from the Union starting in December 1860, following the election of Abraham Lincoln.
The battle flag was later incorporated into the second and third Confederate national flags (the “Stainless Banner” of 1863 and the “Blood-Stained Banner” of 1865), cementing its iconic status in American history.
