Naval Jack History — Why This Flag Is Rectangular

The square battle flag most people picture was carried by the Army of Northern Virginia — designed in 1861 so Southern troops could tell their colors apart from the Stars and Stripes in battle smoke. The rectangular version of the design, with 13 stars on the saltire, was adopted in 1863 as the Confederate Naval Jack, flown at the bow of Confederate warships — which is why this flag is also known as the Confederate Naval Jack. The thin stitched border on this edition reflects the look of those period flags.
