The black Jolly Roger — skull and crossbones on a black field — was the standard warning: surrender now and we’ll spare your lives. It was, counterintuitively, often a flag of mercy. Pirates preferred to take ships with minimal fighting. Cargo was the goal, not combat.

Some historians trace the phrase “no quarter given” to the practice of not offering to pay a soldier’s “quarter” (lodging and keep) as a prisoner of war — to refuse quarter was to refuse to take them alive at all.
