The Bennington 1776 Flag was an early version of the American Flag. Its name came from the Battle of Bennington, during the Revolutionary War in 1776. Legend has it, that Nathaniel Fillmore carried the original off the battlefield. It was passed down through the family, and at 1 time, President Millard Fillmore had it in his possession (Nathaniel’s grandson). It was later donated by the family to the Bennington Museum and because of this association, some refer to it as the Fillmore Flag.
Like many Revolution era flags, the Bennington flag features 13 stars and 13 stripes, symbolic of the 13 American colonies that were in a state of rebellion against Great Britain. The Bennington flag is easily identified by a ’76’ in the canton, recalling the year 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed.
The Bennington flag’s 13 stripes are also differently arranged with white being outermost (rather than red being outermost as in most US flags). It’s stars have seven points each (instead of the now-standard five points) and the blue canton is taller than on other flags, spanning nine instead of seven of the thirteen stripes.
