Calico Jack Rackham Pirate Flag — Red Jolly Roger with Crossed Swords, 3×5 Feet
The Most Legendary Personal Flag in Pirate History
The Calico Jack Rackham flag — a grinning skull above two crossed swords on a bold field — is arguably the single most famous personal pirate flag ever flown. It is the standard under which two of the most celebrated figures in the entire history of piracy sailed, the flag of one of the Caribbean’s most daring and cunning captains, and a design so iconic that it has endured for over 300 years as the definitive image of the golden age buccaneer. This is not just a pirate flag. This is the pirate flag.
The Life & Legend of Calico Jack Rackham
John Rackham (c.1682–1720) — universally known as “Calico Jack” — earned his colorful nickname from his fondness for wearing striped calico trousers, calico being an inexpensive printed cotton cloth that had arrived in Europe from the Indian city of Calicut (modern-day Kozhikode, Kerala) via the trading routes of the East India Company. In an era when most sailors wore practical, drab clothing, Calico Jack’s flamboyant fashion sense made him one of the most recognizable figures in the Caribbean — a pirate who understood the power of personal branding long before the concept existed.
Rackham began his pirate career as quartermaster under the notorious captain Charles Vane, one of the most violent pirates of the Golden Age. When Vane refused to attack a heavily armed French warship in 1718 — a decision his crew viewed as cowardice — Rackham led a vote that deposed Vane and elected himself captain in his place. It was a classically democratic pirate power transition, executed entirely by vote and entirely within the rules of the pirate articles.
Operating primarily in the Caribbean — the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, and the waters between — Rackham built a reputation not for the scale of his plunder but for his audacity, his crew’s loyalty, and his extraordinary personal life.
The Cuban Harbor Escape — One of Piracy’s Greatest Stories
Among all the tales of Calico Jack’s adventures, none better captures his character than the Cuban harbor escape — one of the most daring maneuvers in pirate history.
Rackham and his crew were anchored in a Cuban harbor, preparing to sail, when a Spanish warship entered the harbor accompanied by a small English prize vessel she had recently captured. The Spanish, discovering pirates in the harbor, moved to attack — but Rackham’s vessel was sheltered close behind a small island, and the Spanish commander decided to wait until morning to press the assault rather than risk a night engagement.
Rackham’s situation was desperate. He was massively outgunned and outmanned, with escape by sea essentially impossible against a warship of that size. The harbor was a trap. Most captains would have surrendered. Rackham hatched a different plan entirely.
In the dead of night, with absolute silence, he put his men into a small boat. They rowed quietly around the island — passing within earshot of the Spanish warship — and slipped alongside the captured English vessel without being detected. Boarding her in the darkness, pistols and cutlasses drawn, Rackham’s men told the Spanish prize crew in no uncertain terms that any sound would be their last.
Not a sound was made.
Rackham then quietly cut the English ship loose and sailed her out of the harbor under the nose of the Spanish warship, slipping away into open water before dawn.
When morning came, the Spanish Man-of-War opened furious cannon fire on what they believed to be Rackham’s vessel — now empty and deserted — while Calico Jack was already miles away on the stolen English ship, free, armed, and sailing for open sea.
Anne Bonny & Mary Read — The Women Who Made This Flag Famous
Much of Calico Jack’s enduring fame rests not on his own exploits but on the two extraordinary women who sailed under his flag — Anne Bonny and Mary Read, the most celebrated female pirates in history.
Anne Bonny (c.1698–c.1782) was an Irish-born woman who had married a small-time sailor in the Bahamas before meeting Rackham and choosing the pirate life over respectability. She and Rackham became lovers, and she sailed with his crew disguised — to varying degrees — as a man. Contemporary accounts describe her as one of the most aggressive fighters on the ship.
Mary Read (c.1685–1721) had spent much of her life disguised as a man — serving in the British Army in Flanders and working as a sailor — before ending up aboard Rackham’s vessel. She and Bonny reportedly recognized each other’s true identities and formed a fierce partnership. Trial testimony described both women as fighting with cutlass and pistol with greater ferocity than most of the male crew.
When a Royal Navy sloop under Captain Jonathan Barnet surprised Rackham’s vessel anchored off Jamaica in October 1720, most of the crew — reportedly drunk on rum — were below decks. According to testimony at their trial, Bonny and Read were among the only crew members on deck willing to fight. Read allegedly called down to the hiding men that if they didn’t come up and fight like men she would shoot them herself.
Rackham and his male crew were hanged at Gallows Point, Port Royal, Jamaica in November 1720. Both Bonny and Read pleaded pregnancy and received stays of execution — Read died in prison, while Anne Bonny’s fate after that point remains one of history’s enduring mysteries.
Frequently Asked Questions & Little-Known Facts
Q: Why crossed swords rather than crossed bones on Calico Jack’s flag? Rackham’s personal flag replaced the traditional crossed bones of the generic Jolly Roger with crossed swords (cutlasses) — a deliberate design choice that emphasized his crew’s readiness and willingness to fight. Where the standard skull-and-crossbones offered surrender as an option, crossed blades sent a more aggressive message entirely.
Q: What happened to Calico Jack after his capture? John Rackham was tried for piracy in Spanish Town, Jamaica in November 1720 and hanged shortly after. His body was displayed in an iron gibbet cage at a point of land at the entrance to Port Royal Harbor — subsequently known as “Rackham’s Cay” — as a warning to sailors and pirates entering Jamaican waters. His body remained on display for years.
Q: Did Anne Bonny and Calico Jack have a child together? Historical records suggest Anne Bonny gave birth to Rackham’s child in Cuba before returning to piracy. The child’s fate is unknown. After receiving her stay of execution in Jamaica, Anne Bonny disappears entirely from the historical record — her subsequent life, death, and burial place remain completely unknown, making her one of history’s great unsolved biographical mysteries.
Q: What is calico fabric and where did it come from? Calico is a plain-woven cotton textile, typically printed with floral or striped patterns, that takes its name from Calicut (Kozhikode) on the Malabar Coast of India — a major trading port from which the fabric was exported to Europe by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British East India Companies from the 16th century onward. By Rackham’s era it was widely available and relatively inexpensive — making it an unusual fashion choice for a pirate captain, which is precisely why it stuck as a nickname.
Q: Is this flag still used today? Variations of the Calico Jack flag are among the most widely flown pirate flags in the world today — appearing at Gasparilla Festival in Tampa, Caribbean sailing events, pirate-themed bars and restaurants, and anywhere else the spirit of the Golden Age of Piracy is celebrated.
