This is a flag based on the real Palmetto Guard of South Carolina. The Palmetto Guard was a pre-Civil War militia company in Charleston, South Carolina. It served in the 17th South Carolina Regiment of Infantry. During the Civil War, the Palmetto Guard was divided into the Palmetto Guard Volunteers and the Palmetto Guard Artillery. Half of the Palmetto Guard volunteered for Confederate service in 1861. They joined the 2nd South Carolina Regiment (SCV) as Company. They fought in many battles, including the First Invasion of the North and the Second Invasion of the North. Palmetto Guard Artillery: The other half of the Palmetto Guard remained in Charleston as a militia unit. In February 1862, the men under 2nd Lt. Buist all enlisted in Confederate service.
