A Flag Rooted in Mississippi’s Deep Southern Heritage
The Mississippi State Flag adopted on February 7, 1894 is one of the most historically significant — and debated — state flags in American history. Flown for over 126 years, it stood as a bold symbol of Mississippi’s identity, its Confederate past, and its place among the original fabric of the American South before being retired in 2020.
Owning and displaying this flag is a meaningful way to preserve and honor a pivotal piece of Mississippi’s history.
History & Symbolism of the 1894 Mississippi Flag
The flag is divided into three horizontal bars of red, white, and blue — the national colors of the United States — reflecting Mississippi’s identity as an American state while honoring its distinct Southern roots.
In the upper left canton sits the Confederate Battle Flag emblem — the blue saltire bearing 13 white stars, representing the 13 original American colonies that declared independence from Britain in 1776. Its inclusion in the Mississippi flag was a deliberate acknowledgment of the state’s role in the Confederate States of America (1861–1865), of which Mississippi was a founding member. Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, was himself a Mississippi statesman.
Mississippi was among the last states to carry Confederate symbolism in its official state flag, making this design one of the most recognizable and historically layered state flags ever flown in the United States. In November 2020, Mississippi approved a new state flag, retiring this design after 126 years of continuous use.
Frequently Asked Questions & Little-Known Facts
Q: Why did Mississippi include the Confederate Battle Flag in its state flag? When the flag was adopted in 1894, it was during the height of the “Lost Cause” movement — a cultural effort across the South to memorialize and reframe the Confederate legacy. Mississippi’s legislature incorporated the Confederate emblem as a direct tribute to that heritage, and it remained in place for over a century.
Q: When and why was the flag changed? In June 2020, amid nationwide discussions about Confederate symbolism, Mississippi’s legislature voted to retire the 1894 flag. A new design — the “In God We Trust” flag featuring a magnolia blossom — was approved in November 2020 and became the official state flag.
Q: What do the 13 stars in the Confederate emblem represent? The 13 stars represent the 13 original American colonies that broke from British rule in 1776 — the same symbolism used in the Confederate Battle Flag, which claimed those 13 states as the rightful heirs of America’s founding ideals of self-governance and states’ rights.
Q: Was Mississippi an important Confederate state? Critically so. Mississippi was the second state to secede from the Union on January 9, 1861. The state was home to Jefferson Davis, the only President of the Confederate States of America, and was the site of the pivotal Siege of Vicksburg (1863) — one of the most strategically decisive campaigns of the entire Civil War.
Q: Is this flag still legal to display? Yes, absolutely. The 1894 Mississippi flag is a legal, historical artifact and its display is protected under the First Amendment. Many collectors, historians, and Mississippians continue to fly it as a piece of state and Southern heritage.

Guilford Courthouse Flag aka Granville County Militia Flags
Size 3 x 5 feet Premium Sewn Cotton Flag
This is the flag of the Granville County Militia, which fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in the American Revolutionary War. In March of 1781, Americans and the Redcoats fought what was to be a pivotal battle of the War of Independence. At Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina, American General Greene faced British General Cornwallis. Two and a half hours of ferocious fighting ensued. Cornwallis himself stated, “I never saw such fighting since God made me. The Americans fought like demons.” The British won the battle, but at great cost. Cornwallis lost 25% of his troops, casualties he could not replace. He had no supplies, and a heavy, cold rain began to come down. The Americans skillfully executed a retreat, and the British were forced to end pursuit. Cornwallis lost control of the Carolinas. British statesman Charles James Fox stated: “Another such victory would ruin the British army.” Cornwallis ended up marching to Yorktown, Virginia. There the British were trapped by a combination of American and French armies. In the last major battle of the war, Cornwallis was forced to surrender, seven months after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.
