History of the 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment

The 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized in Montgomery, Alabama in September 1861, mustering approximately 1,100 men into Confederate service at its formation. What followed was one of the most punishing combat records of any regiment in the Army of Tennessee.

The regiment’s early service took it into East Tennessee, before it was drawn into the brutal campaigns that would define the Western Theater. Among its most significant engagements:

• Siege of Vicksburg — The 20th Alabama endured the grinding siege that culminated in the fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, one of the most decisive Confederate defeats of the war.
• Battle of Missionary Ridge (November 1863) — The regiment fought in this pivotal engagement near Chattanooga, Tennessee, as Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant broke the Confederate line in a dramatic uphill assault.
• The Atlanta Campaign (1864) — The 20th fought continuously from the Battle of Dalton through Kennesaw Mountain and into the defense of Atlanta itself — months of nearly unbroken combat against General William T. Sherman’s advancing Union army.
• Hood’s Tennessee Campaign (1864) — After the fall of Atlanta, the regiment marched north with General John Bell Hood, fighting at the Battle of Nashville and subsequent engagements at Kingston and Bentonville as the Confederacy’s Western army was steadily destroyed.

By the war’s end, of the 1,100 men who had taken the field with the Twentieth Alabama, only 63 remained. That staggering attrition — nearly 95% losses to combat, disease, wounds, and capture — stands as a testament to what this regiment endured.
