On January 17, 1781, General Daniel Morgan led American forces to a stunning triumph over British Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton at the Battle of Cowpens, South Carolina. The engagement routed elite British troops from Lord Cornwallis’ army, with over 900 Redcoats captured or killed. The victory was so devastating that Cornwallis reportedly snapped his sword in frustration upon hearing the news.
