Texas Fourth Artillery Battalion (Shea’s Artillery Battalion)

Historic Flag of Civil War, in sewn premium cotton quality flag.

Size: 3 x 5 feet

This distinctive flag was used by Texas Fourth Artillery Battalion (Shea’s Artillery Battalion) during the Civil War. In December of 1861 the unit was formed from others, including the 8th Texas Infantry Batallion. Most of the men were from Bexar, Goliad, Guadalupe, Nueces, Refugio, and Victoria counties. In 1862, Shea’s Battalion marched to Cedar Bayou and captured Federals landing at Aransas Pass, and a few weeks later fought with Union troops and rescued Confederate prisoners. Shea’s Battalion fought in the battle at Lavaca in the fall of 1862, forcing the retreat of Union gunboats. With the 8th Texas, Shea’s Battalion drove Federals back during the battle of Saint Joseph’s Island in 1863. It faced other engagements in Texas, but also saw action at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill in Louisiana in 1864. It mustered out on May 22, 1865, while serving on coastal defense.

Note on the reverse (backs) of flags: It is standard traditional flag construction that images, words and other adornments on a flag are “backwards” when viewed from behind. It is not correct to sew two standard flags back-to-back in order for them to read the same from both directions.
