South Carolina Flag Big Red – Big Red Confederate SC Flag

On January 9, 1861, cadets from the South Carolina Military Academy—now known as The Citadel—may have fired the first shots of the Civil War by intercepting the Union supply ship, the Star of the West, which was en route to resupply Fort Sumter. Although Fort Sumter wouldn’t fall until April, this early exchange marked the first instance of gunfire between the North and South. After South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860, it demanded that the Federal garrison at Fort Sumter be removed immediately—a demand President James Buchanan refused. With Major Robert Anderson and his 80 soldiers in desperate need of supplies inside the fort, the Star of the West was dispatched. Then, two cannon shots thundered from a South Carolina battery on Morris Island, fired by cadet George E. Haynsworth of The Citadel in Charleston. These shots served as the opening salvo of the war, and further fire quickly damaged the ship. Overhead, the cadets flew a red banner emblazoned with a white palmetto and crescent—the Confederate South Carolina Big Red Flag, characterized by its red background, palm tree, and crescent—that would come to symbolize the conflict.
