The Sons of Liberty groups formed before the American Revolutionary War. They created the Sons of Liberty flag to stand against unfair treatment of American colonists. The flag’s stripes represented the colonies that protested British laws, starting with those that opposed the Stamp Act of 1765.
As protests spread through the colonies, Liberty Flags became more common. People often gathered under large oak trees or other unique trees in the town square. They also put up Liberty Poles, though local authorities and Loyalists often tried to tear them down. In one case, after a Liberty Pole was destroyed twice, the local Sons of Liberty raised a new one reinforced with iron to prevent it from being cut down.
The Sons of Liberty flag was flown all across the colonies, from New England to Georgia, becoming a powerful symbol of the fight for freedom and independence.
