Fort Moultrie Flag Liberty – South Carolina Historic Revolutionary War Flag
Size: 3×5 Feet Sewn Cotton
In 1775, American Colonel Moultrie assumed control of a fort in South Carolina and needed a flag for his troops. His soldiers wore blue uniforms, their caps adorned with silver crescents and emblazoned with the motto “Liberty or Death.” In response, a blue flag featuring a crescent in the upper corner was created. In Moultrie’s own words, “This was the first American flag displayed in the South.”
The following year, in 1776, during the defense of Fort Sullivan against the British, the blue flag was raised but later fell onto the beach outside the fort amid the battle. Sergeant William Jasper bravely leaped over the parapet, ran along the length of the fort, and recovered the flag. He managed to secure it back in place so that it once again flew as the Americans successfully repelled the British assault. In recognition of Colonel Moultrie’s stand against the British, Fort Sullivan was later renamed Moultrie.
