While individual units of US Army Special Forces have their own distinctive insignia, this flag represents the Regimental Colors of 1st Special Forces, the flag of all US Army Special Forces. It was adopted for the First Special Service Force of World War II on 26 February 1943. The knife has its own distinctive shape and pattern, and was issued only to the First Special Service Force. The crest has the crossed arrows of the collar insignia worn by the First Special Service Force in World War II, but was changed from gold to silver to harmonize with the shield, as well as give a different appearance from the collar insignia. (The coat of arms and distinctive unit insignia was approved on 8 July 1960.) The background color is Jungle Green.
