Clover, a puppy trained to changes in high blood sugar from the smell of one’s breath, has happily napping with his owner River, a 6 year-old boy who has Type 1 diabetes, when he smelled his blood sugar fall. She immediately warned River’s mom by pressing her paw to the mother’s leg. Recognizing the sign, River’s mother raced upstairs to find her son’s blood level to be at 40, dangerously. Luckily, River was caught just in time, thanks to Clover’s vigilance.
