The Charleston city council is unsure whether to change the John C. Calhoun statue in Marion Park to reflect the honorees views on race based slavery. The issue has proponents and detractors on both sides. This debate is a small part of a larger debate encompassing many public monuments in the south. The removal of the statues is unlikely due to a compromise made when the Confederate flag was removed from the capital.
