Germany has much to teach us about our Confederate memorials

Germany has a lot to teach us about our Confederate memorials. It is not a good idea to get rid of a piece of history. It can be moved if everyone wants it, but because something is not like, that does not mean that it needs to go away. There is a lot to learn from history. Monuments are just symbols. It’s us that need to think about moving ourselves.

Key Takeaways:

  • American perceptions and attitudes towards history are vastly different than other contries in the world.
  • There are deeper future implications to removing markers of our own history
  • Shifting our perspective from that of being offended to creating opportunities for education is one way to preserve these monuments

“What we need is a middle way that doesn’t require banishing them to some obscure corner of our cities but uses them, instead, to educate.”
