Rio Grand Republic Flag / Laredo Flag
An alternate version of the original flag, which had a green bar instead of this flag’s black one.
The three northern states of Mexico – Cohahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas – declared independence in October 1838. A republic was organized on January 18th, 1839, and Jesus Cardenas was made President. On January 28th the republic’s flag was planted in the town square of Guerrero, Mexico.
Laredo was made Capital of the Republic of the Rio Grande on January 17, 1840. Each year Laredo holds the largest and oldest George Washington Birthday Parade in the world, and during the two week celebration the Republic of the Rio Grande meets and holds an election of a new President. Republic of the Rio Grande money is circulated, with the photo of the new President on it. The Republic officially lasted 283 days, and was a result of the actions of Santa Anna when he revoked the Mexican Constitution of 1824.
