New England Flag 3 X 5 ft. Standard

In the early years of the Massachusetts Bay Colony it was common for flags to bear a cross. However, in 1636 there was quite a fuss about this (which is covered more fully in an article which is sent with this flag; or we will send it to you on request). The Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Endicott, ordered the cross removed from the flags used in Massachusetts. Then the colony’s Great and General Court (the local legislature) determined that Endicott “exceeded the limits of his calling” with the order. The Court the colony could adopt any flag they wanted to. It soon became popular for the flags to bear a green pine tree.
