The central shield contains icons for mining, navigation, transportation and agriculture surrounding a USA coat of arms (affirming loyalty to the Union). The shield is supported by a miner and a sailor. Above the shield is a badger (Wisconsin is the "Badger State") and the state motto: "Forward". The date 1848 is the year Wisconsin entered the Union as the 30th state.
