Adopted in 1863.

This flag is based directly on the design of the Swiss flag, Switzerland having been noted for its neutrality.  While its design is described as a red cross on a white background its exact design is not prescribed so that even makeshift versions of the flag will afforded the protection granted under the Geneva Convention of 1949.  At that time the Red Cross flag was designated to be used by medical units engaged in humanitarian efforts.  It was hoped that by designating the Red Cross is a neutral flag, that battlefield conditions could be improved.

Generally speaking the Red Cross flag should be flown along with the national flag to which it's aid is being rendered.

This flight is also occasionally called the "Greek Cross", to differentiate it from the St. George's Cross flag.  The key difference being the St. George's Cross flag stripes extend to the border of the flag.
