The flag of Israel is based on earlier Zionist movement flags going back to 1891.

The center star is a centuries old Jewish symbol called the Star (or Shield) of David. The white background with two blue stripes are the colors and pattern of traditional prayer shawls which often have blue edges.

The flag has remained unchanged since Israel was formed in 1948.
