This flag was initially the flag of the Hawaiian Independent kingdom and was kept after gaining statehood.

The Union Jack does not denote and UK allegiance or control, but rather recalls the flag given to the King of the island by early British explorer George Vancouver. The king liked it so much he used it on his own flag.

The stripes represent the main 8 of the 122 islands of the state.
