Adopted in 1866.

This flags design is based on both the flags of France and Spain, the two states that protect the independence of the small State of Andorra. The tricolor design is taken from the flag of France while the yellow and red colors are taken from the Spanish flag. The flags of Chad and Romania are also vertical tricolors of blue, yellow and red and can be easily confused with this flag.  A key difference is that on the Andorra flag the center stripe is slightly wider than the other two stripes.

The motto on the coat of arms in the middle stripe means "Strength United is Stronger".
