Adopted 1901

This flag was the result of a national public competition held in 1901 to design the Australian flag.

It incorporates the British Blue Ensign as a mark of membership in the Commonwealth along with the "Southern Cross" a star constellation visible from Australia's position in the Southern Hemisphere.

The large star has 7 points, each representing the Australian states (one represents the territories collectively).
