A very ancient symbol. The unity of perfect opposites. Often mind and body. Male and female. 

Yang has been defined as "sunny place, north bank (river), sunshine" and is also associated with the elements fire and air, (the bright elements) Yang is active, light, masculine, positive, upward-seeking, producing and corresponds to the daytime.

Yin  has been defined as "shady place, south bank; cloudy, overcast". it is associated with water and earth (the dark elements),  passive, dark, feminine, negative, downward-seeking, consuming and corresponds to the night.

Traditionally he outer circle of the symbol represents the entirety of all perceivable natural phenomena, while the black and white shapes that fill the circile represent the delicate interaction of two nattural aspects, called "yin" (black) and "yang" (white) which cause the phenomena to appear in their peculiar way. Each cannot exist without the other. Each aspect contains within it the seed of the other.
